Devastating Crash on R524 Takes Lives of 3 Police Officers, 2 Prisoners, and a Bakkie Driver in Thohoyandou

October 6, 2026 dailymirror Thohoyandou – Among the six victims of the R524 (Levubu Road) crash were three officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and two awaiting-trial detainees.

The tragic incident occurred earlier today, Tuesday 6 October 2026, just outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo, involving a police van and a bakkie.

The accident happened while the detainees were being transported from the Tshilwavhusiku Police Station to a correctional facility in Thohoyandou.

“Two of the awaiting-trial prisoners and two police officers perished at the scene, along with the driver of the Mahindra bakkie, which was owned by a water supply company,” lamented police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba.

Emergency Medical Services responded to the incident and pronounced five individuals, including the driver of the bakkie, dead at the scene.

The third police officer was transported to a hospital but sadly later succumbed to their injuries.

“The current death toll stands at six, which includes three SAPS officers – one male and two females; two awaiting-trial prisoners, both males; and the male driver of the civilian vehicle,” stated Brigadier Mashaba.

“The other awaiting-trial prisoner sustained serious injuries and is being treated at a medical facility under police supervision.”

The identities of those who passed away are being withheld pending notification of their next of kin.

An investigation into the possibility of culpable homicide is underway by the police.

Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, the SAPS Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner, has expressed condolences to the grieving families.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to all the families, colleagues, and loved ones who are mourning the loss of those who perished in this tragic event,” said Lieutenant General Scheepers.

“We also wish the injured a swift and full recovery.”
