“Back To 8-4-4 System?” High Court Orders Education CS To Do This Within 14 Days
The cabinet secretary for education, Julius Ogamba, was recently given an order by the High Court to expedite the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
Concerns about how the system impacts students and how much it costs Kenyan families overall are leading to this action.
The 8-4-4 system was replaced with the CBC, which has been harshly criticized by parents and educators alike. Many claim that the CBC is far more expensive and that parents bear the lion’s share of the expense. A return to the more cost-effective 8-4-4 system is being called for by some due to their dissatisfaction with the growing costs of educational materials, assessments, and other obligations.
The court has ordered Education CS Ogamba to form a quality assurance commission to assess the effectiveness and progress of the CBC within 14 days. The court’s mandate that a quality assurance committee be established highlights how important it is to conduct a comprehensive review of the CBC. This panel is meant to oversee the curriculum’s implementation and provide a comprehensive assessment of its strengths and weaknesses.
The outcomes could influence the choice between continuing with the CBC or returning to the 8-4-4 system, which many Kenyans believe was more workable and simple for average families to implement. As the deadline approaches, the public and the educational community are closely monitoring CS Ogamba’s response to the court’s directions. The results of this assessment could significantly affect Kenya’s future and present significant obstacles to the country’s educational path.
