Why Billionaire Wicknell Chivayo and Wife Lucy Will Be Buried Without Their Heads

Zimbabwean businessman and billionaire Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, are set to be laid to rest without their heads following the helicopter crash that claimed their lives.

The couple was among six people who died when their helicopter crashed near Marondera, Zimbabwe, on September 30, 2026. The aircraft reportedly caught fire after the crash, leaving the victims’ remains severely damaged.

The condition of the bodies presented a major challenge to investigators and relatives as they worked to identify the victims. Forensic experts relied on DNA analysis to establish the identities of the recovered remains before releasing them to the families for burial.

According to the family, the heads of Chivayo and Lucy were not recovered from the crash site. This means the couple’s remains will be buried without their heads, while their relatives have also decided against holding a public viewing of the bodies.

The family’s explanation has also sought to address speculation circulating on social media about the missing remains. Relatives have maintained that forensic examinations did not establish that some of the recovered remains being discussed online belonged to the couple’s heads.

The decision not to have a public viewing is understood to be linked to the extensive damage caused by the crash and the condition in which the remains were recovered. Instead, the family is preparing for a private farewell as it comes to terms with the tragedy.

Chivayo was a prominent Zimbabwean businessman known for his high-profile lifestyle and involvement in major business ventures. His death alongside his wife has therefore attracted widespread attention in Zimbabwe and beyond.

The couple is expected to be buried side by side at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare on October 8, 2026.

The tragedy has left relatives, friends and members of the public mourning a couple whose lives were cut short in a devastating aviation accident.
