Way-Too-Early Erling Haaland Landing Spots Amid Transfer Rumors

With the eight-time league champions having lodged an appeal, the most pressing question is whether those charges will stick. If that appeal fails, exactly what punishment will be handed down will become the biggest concern for City, who have maintained their innocence throughout the proceedings.
Given the strength of the Premier League's statement on the charges, in which the word "sham" was used five times, it is fair to assume that any punishment will be severe enough to potentially lead to relegation. After that, the biggest remaining questions will focus on the futures of their biggest stars, with none more intriguing than Erling Haaland's.
The 26-year-old has scored 169 goals in 205 appearances for City and has a contract in Manchester until 2034, but he would surely press for an exit if relegation is confirmed. In a worst-case scenario, it may even be impossible to keep him while complying with financial rules.
So, what are his options? Below are his five most likely destinations, with ambition, spending power, and the need for a striker as the chief considerations.
There is, of course, the possibility that a club in Saudi Arabia or a similar league could come up with enough money to turn Haaland's head. But there is no slide discussing that possibility because (1) it quite simply isn't interesting and (2) it still seems unlikely that the guy who used to drive around listening to the Champions League theme music would give up the opportunity to play in the competition for a few sacks of cash.
If you think you have a better idea, though, be sure to leave your suggestion in the B/R App comments.
Eston Parker/ISI Photos/ISI Photos via Getty ImagesBarcelona looked to have a glaring need in attack this summer. Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres departed for Major League Soccer and Paris Saint-Germain, respectively, and widely reported interest in AtlĂ©tico Madrid's JuliĂĄn Ălvarez did not materialize.
While Gabriel Jesus did arrive from Arsenal, there was still a significant question mark over the club's plans at centre-forward, both for this season and beyond. The answer to that question has been to play former star winger Raphinha centrally, and the results have been impressive.
The Brazilian has scored 14 goals in eight appearances this season, while Barcelona have won those eight games and scored 36 goals in total. This is a small sample size, though, and Barcelona manager Hansi Flick would surely still welcome the idea of incorporating Haaland into this attack.
The deal would also see the big forward join up with Lamine Yamal to form probably the most exciting attacking partnership in Europe, putting Barcelona right in the frame as Champions League favorites.

Not really. They have Kylian Mbappe up front, and the Frenchman has been in decent form with eight goals in eight games this season. He's also joined in attack by VinĂcius JĂșnior, who signed a new contract in the summer, and $159 million signing Yan Diomande is waiting in the wings to take on a bigger role as well.
Could adding yet another star in attack also potentially upset the balance of a squad that looks awfully top-heavy?
Good point. MbappĂ© certainly seems to want to be the focal point of the team, which is arguably a fair request for a man of his talents. Adding Haaland would also make Diomande a likely reserve and push either MbappĂ© or VinĂcius out to the right side of the attack, where neither has looked entirely comfortable before.
So, there's no way Real Madrid would be interested, right?
That would be the logical conclusion, yes. But logic doesn't exist in the halls of the Santiago Bernabéu. All that matters is that the biggest stars in the world play there; the details can be figured out later, typically after a slew of the world's best managers have failed to do so. And then, eventually, the team adds to its record-setting 15 European titles, the ultimate justification for all the chaos that preceded that glory.
The team would likely need to be remodeled around him, but Haaland feels as obvious a Real Madrid target as anyone else potentially on the market. The move would also reunite him with former Borussia Dortmund teammate Jude Bellingham, and if Mbappé can be factored in as well, this would be a thrilling attack to watch.
ROBERTO SCHMIDT/AFP via Getty ImagesBayern Munich may not currently need a striker. Harry Kane scored 61 goals last season and is a serious contender to win the Ballon d'Or as the world's player of the year. Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg has also reported that the Englishman has agreed in principle to a new contract until 2029.
But at 33, it would be fair to question how much longer Kane can remain at the top of his game. Even if he is able to stave off Father Time, though, the most exciting aspect of this possibility could actually be Kane and Haaland playing together.
The former Tottenham Hotspur man has become an elite-level playmaker in Munich, in addition to his goalscoring exploits, often dropping out of the forward line to receive the ball under pressure and pinging it into space for more athletic teammates to run onto. What if he could continue fleshing out that creative side of his game, with Haaland as a potential target for those raking forward passes?
While there would likely have to be trade-offs in Bayern's intense defensive system to accommodate the two strikers, the upside of such an approach could make them almost impossible to stop in attack.

However, it could also be a risk to incorporate yet another superstar forward into an attack that has only really taken off after adopting a team-first approach.
Kylian Mbappé's departure for Madrid in 2024 saw Ousmane Dembélé take his place as the focal point of the team's attack, with the latter's defensive work key in setting the tone for the energetic style that has seen Luis Enrique's team roll to consecutive European titles.
PSG have been down the road of acquiring stars when it arguably didn't make sense to do so, and it led them to an expensive and futile chase for European glory until the past two seasons.
At some point, though, teams will surely start to figure out better ways to nullify this attack. It may even already be happening. Although it's early, the Parisiens have already drawn two and lost one of their five league games.
Haaland would provide more of a goalscoring threat than Dembele or the newly acquired Ferran Torres, and his size and athleticism could unlock an even more devastating element to PSG's attack that we haven't seen yet.

If cinema has taught us anything, it's that when enemies have to team up, it can be pretty cool. The thought of suddenly having to support Haaland after being rage-baited by him for years might send a shiver down the spines of Gabriel and Arsenal fans alike, but North London is the only destination that makes sense if the three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner is to stay in England.
No other team can offer the combination of an obvious need in attack and the clear ability to compete for the biggest honours domestically and in Europe. Liverpool have two strikers who cost in excess of $90 million, while Chelsea and Manchester United still have questions to answer regarding how ambitious they actually are.
Arsenal have spent the summer pursuing VinĂcius JĂșnior and JuliĂĄn Ălvarez, as widely reported. It's clear the forward line is where they want to make their next big addition, and Haaland's physicality would provide the attacking boost the Gunners likely had in mind when they signed Viktor Gyökeres last summer.
