Uruzgan residents complain of shortage of medicines, doctors

(TOLONews): Residents of Uruzgan complain about a shortage of medicines and experienced male and female doctors at public hospitals.

They say the shortages often force them to take their patients to private hospitals.

Abdullah, the father of a sick child, said: “I went to a public health facility, but there was no proper treatment, no medicine and no experienced doctor. They told me to take the child to Kandahar.”

Residents are calling on the Islamic Emirate to take serious steps to provide the province with medicines and more male and female doctors.

Naqibullah, a resident of Uruzgan, said: “There are no medicines at the public hospital, and there are no experienced doctors either. Patients have to pay all medicine expenses themselves.”

Another resident, Mohammad Hashim, said: “When we take a patient there, the doctors examine them and say they have no medicine and tell us to take the patient to the provincial center. At the center, they tell us to go to Kandahar.”

Local officials in Uruzgan say efforts are underway to address the problems.

Samiullah Ekrama, spokesman for the Uruzgan governor, said: “We are working to bring experienced doctors here in the near future, and we have also raised the shortage of medicines with the central authorities.”

Officials add that construction of new health centers will soon begin in five districts of Uruzgan to improve access to healthcare services.
