Three SAPS Officers, Two Prisoners & Civilian Killed In Deadly Head-On Collision
Six Dead As Police Vehicle Collides Head-On With Bakkie On R524
A devastating road crash in Limpopo has claimed six lives, including three South African Police Service (SAPS) members and two awaiting-trial prisoners, after a police vehicle collided head-on with a civilian bakkie on the R524 Levubu Road in the Vhembe District on Tuesday morning.
The fatal collision happened while a SAPS vehicle from Tshilwavhusiku Police Station was transporting three awaiting-trial prisoners to a correctional facility in Thohoyandou. According to police, the vehicle collided with a white Mahindra bakkie belonging to Tshisimani Water.
Emergency Medical Services rushed to the scene after the crash and initially certified five people dead. However, the death toll later increased to six when a third SAPS member, who had sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, succumbed to those injuries.
The six victims comprise three SAPS members — one male and two females — two male awaiting-trial prisoners and the male driver of the civilian vehicle.
One of the three prisoners survived the collision but sustained serious injuries. He was taken to hospital under police guard, with his condition requiring continued medical attention.
The horrific incident has prompted an investigation by authorities, with a case of culpable homicide opened at Makhado Police Station. Investigators are expected to establish exactly how the vehicles collided and what circumstances led to the deadly crash. At this stage, police have not announced a definitive cause for the collision.
The crash also caused significant disruption along the R524. Earlier reports from the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety said the road was closed following a multi-vehicle collision approximately five kilometres outside Louis Trichardt, while emergency personnel and traffic officials attended the scene. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been released. SAPS said their names would only be made public after the necessary procedures had been completed and their next of kin notified.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers expressed his condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones affected by the tragedy. He also wished the injured survivor a speedy recovery.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by police officials and other road users while travelling on South Africa’s roads. For the families of the six victims, however, Tuesday’s journey has ended in an unimaginable tragedy.
