Ban on public gatherings, processions and display of weapons enforced across the province

The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from today until October 15, banning public gatherings and processions involving five or more people amid security concerns.

The Punjab Home Department issued a notification under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, imposing restrictions on gatherings in public places, highways and open spaces.

The order also prohibits the carrying or display of weapons in public places and the incitement or encouragement of people to participate in illegal gatherings.

Under the notification, gatherings, rallies, public meetings, sit-ins, processions and demonstrations involving five or more people are prohibited during the period.

However, the restrictions do not apply to wedding ceremonies, funeral prayers, burials or activities at mosques and other places of worship.

Courts, government institutions and events held with official permission have also been exempted.

The restrictions do not apply to law enforcement, intelligence and security personnel while performing official duties.

According to the Punjab Home Department, the decision was taken following information received from law enforcement and intelligence agencies regarding potential threats to public peace and the safety of life and property.

The department said intelligence reports indicated that terrorist organisations were planning to target public gatherings.

It added that rallies, demonstrations, public meetings, sit-ins and processions could potentially become targets for attacks.

Law enforcement agencies had requested immediate security measures to address the potential threats, according to the notification.
