“Raila Won With 53.6% In 2022 Elections” Matiangi Reveals What Happened

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has claimed that election information received by the Azimio la Umoja camp showed that Raila Odinga had won 53.6 per cent of the presidential vote in the 2022 General Election.

Matiang’i made the remarks on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, during an interview with Msenangu FM, while reflecting on the disputed presidential election.

According to the Jubilee Party leader, information relayed to the Azimio team after voting indicated that Raila had surpassed the 50 per cent threshold required to win the presidency.

He said the team subsequently waited for the official announcement of the presidential results.

Matiang’i also referred to polling information that he said political parties had previously relied on during elections, including exit polls conducted during by-elections.

He maintained that the information they received from such exercises had, in his experience, closely matched eventual results.

The former CS further revisited the disagreement that emerged within the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as the 2022 presidential results were being announced.

He pointed out that four of the seven commissioners publicly rejected the final results announced by then-IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, while three supported the declaration.

Official IEBC results placed William Ruto at 50.49 per cent and Raila at 48.85 per cent. Raila challenged the outcome at the Supreme Court, but the court upheld Ruto’s election.

Matiang’i said his account was based on information available to the Azimio side during the election period and did not represent the officially declared result.

He also indicated that some information from his time in government could not be publicly discussed because of confidentiality obligations under the Official Secrets Act.
