Punjab CM receives UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award in Muscat

LAHORE  –  Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif received the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award for the province’s ‘Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar’ housing project at a ceremony held at the historic Convention and Exhibition Centre here on Monday, according to a handout.

Invited to Muscat as a State Guest to receive the prestigious award, the chief minister was warmly welcomed at the World Habitat Day ceremony. UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Rossbach welcomed Ms Maryam and other participants, while the hall erupted in applause as she received the award.

The chief minister dedicated the honour to the people who had built their homes under the ‘Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar’ programme. This  award marks the first time, according to the Punjab government, that a provincial housing project from Pakistan has received the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award.

Only five countries were selected for the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour this year. Other recipients included Myanmar’s Htoo Weng, Brazil’s Thiago Baurmann Gubert, Tunisia’s Abdelmalek Ghanem and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

The award ceremony was part of World Habitat Day events in Muscat, where Ms Maryam also attended the opening of a special UN-Habitat exhibition. She was invited to a ceremony for the signing of development agreements and participated in a group photograph with other participants. A briefing at the award ceremony highlighted that the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour is one of the highest distinctions associated with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme. It is awarded to individuals, cities, and public and private institutions and research organisations in recognition of outstanding contributions to housing and sustainable urban development. The award seeks to promote affordable and adequate housing, sustainable urban development, improved basic urban facilities, better urban planning and development, and reconstruction and recovery following natural disasters.

World Teachers’ Day observed in Shangla with dignity

 The Scroll of Honour has been presented to around 200 public and private institutions over the past 37 years. Pakistan received the award in 2007. According to the briefing, Punjab’s ‘Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar’ project was selected from more than 150 initiatives worldwide, emerging among the leading projects recognised this year.
