Oburu’s Eldest Son Jaoko Oburu Fires Back at Maverick Aoko For Spreading Fake News About His Father

Controversy erupted on social media on Tuesday evening after blogger Maverick Aoko claimed that Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader and Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Oginga had died.

Aoko made the sensational claim in a post on X, writing: “OBURU ODINGA YOUTH LEADER IS DEAD!” The post quickly gained traction online, triggering widespread speculation and concern among Kenyans over the 83-year-old politician’s health.

Oburu’s eldest son, Jaoko Oburu Odinga, was among those who reacted to the claim. Quoting Aoko’s post, Jaoko criticised the blogger, writing: “This is very careless of you Maverick Aoko.”

Although Jaoko did not provide details about his father’s condition in the brief response, his remarks were viewed as a rejection of the death claim.

The online speculation came hours after ODM Communications Director Philip Etale sought to reassure the public that Oburu was well.

Etale said the veteran politician had visited Nairobi Hospital on Sunday for a routine medical check-up after returning from the United Kingdom.

“Oburu is back. He went to Nairobi Hospital for a routine check-up… There’s no cause for alarm,” Etale said, adding that he had spoken to the senator the previous evening.

He also criticised social media users for exaggerating reports surrounding Oburu’s health, insisting that the ODM leader was doing well.

Oburu has recently undergone medical reviews both in Kenya and abroad, including a visit to London. Party officials have maintained that the medical checks were precautionary and related to his advanced age.

As of Tuesday evening, there was no official statement from Oburu’s family confirming the death claim or any serious deterioration in his condition.

The unverified report has nevertheless reignited debate over the spread of false information on social media, particularly concerning the health of prominent public figures.
