Oburu Oginga Health Update: ODM Breaks Silence After Fresh Nairobi Hospital Reports

Oburu Oginga Health Update: ODM Breaks Silence After Fresh Nairobi Hospital Reports

Fresh concerns over the health of ODM leader and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga have emerged after reports indicated that he had visited Nairobi Hospital, prompting renewed speculation about his condition.

The reports surfaced on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, leading ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale to respond to claims circulating on social media and in sections of the media.

Etale reassured the public that Oburu was doing well and had visited Nairobi Hospital for a routine medical check-up. He said he had spoken to the veteran politician on Monday evening and there was no reason for alarm.

According to Etale, Oburu had not been urgently taken to hospital, contrary to claims appearing in some reports. He urged the public to confirm information before sharing sensitive reports about the senator’s health.

The clarification came a day after a report claimed that Oburu had been admitted to Nairobi Hospital, where he was allegedly receiving treatment after arriving on Saturday. The report, which cited a hospital source, further claimed that he was being treated for a chronic condition.

The latest reports come shortly after Oburu travelled to the United Kingdom for medical attention.

On September 10, Oburu confirmed that he was in the UK for a routine medical examination following advice from his doctors and ODM officials. He explained that the trip was meant to facilitate further medical assessment while also giving him an opportunity to rest and recover.

He also assured ODM supporters that his absence would not disrupt the party’s operations, noting that the movement had established structures capable of managing its affairs.

While he was in Britain, speculation about his health continued. His sister, Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, later said that Oburu’s condition had improved but that he was still attending medical appointments. She clarified that he had not been admitted to hospital but was staying near the facility to make it easier for him to attend appointments and consult doctors.

Oburu was also reported to have remained active during his stay in the UK, with reports indicating that he was seen in London and continued receiving visitors and engaging with political figures.

After returning to Kenya, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga said on October 5 that she had visited Oburu and found him recovering. She noted that despite stepping back from demanding public engagements, the ODM leader remained involved in party matters.

Wanga also appealed to Kenyans and ODM supporters to give Oburu sufficient time to regain his strength.

The latest reports are not the first health-related claims involving Oburu this year. Earlier in September, he was also reported to have visited Nairobi Hospital. He subsequently dismissed suggestions that he had been seriously ill, explaining that the visit was simply for a general medical check-up.

Before travelling to Britain, Oburu had also spoken about a previous illness that required hospital treatment. He revealed that he had initially been admitted after falling ill and was later hospitalised again after becoming unwell following a golf outing in Kisumu. He said he was eventually discharged and continued recuperating at home.

Oburu’s health has attracted considerable public interest because of his influential position within ODM. He assumed leadership of the party following the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in October 2025.

Since taking over, Oburu has played a significant role in steering ODM through a challenging political period involving internal disagreements and preparations for the 2027 General Election.

The veteran politician has also been popularly associated with the nickname “Youth Leader.” President William Ruto used the same description while recalling his final conversation with Oburu on the morning Raila Odinga died.

Despite the renewed speculation, there is currently no confirmed information indicating that Oburu Oginga has died.

Instead, the latest clarification from ODM directly disputes the death reports. Etale said Oburu was okay, confirmed that he had spoken to him on Monday evening and explained that the senator would temporarily scale back his political engagements as he continues recovering.

The conflicting reports underscore the importance of verifying sensitive information before sharing it, particularly when it concerns someone’s health.

For now, the official position from ODM is that Oburu Oginga is alive, recently visited Nairobi Hospital for a medical check-up and is taking time to recover before resuming his political activities fully.

Any reports claiming that he has died should therefore be treated as unverified unless confirmed by his family, ODM officials or another authoritative source.
