Not Qualified? Bad News for Sifuna as Details Emerge on Why He May Not Become President in 2027

Homa Bay Governor and ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga has questioned Edwin Sifuna’s chances of winning the presidency in the 2027 General Election, warning that divisions within Kenya’s opposition could undermine his ambitions.

Speaking during a media interview on Sunday, October 4, Wanga said the opposition was facing a major challenge in agreeing on a single presidential candidate ahead of the election. She argued that without unity, any candidate seeking to challenge President William Ruto would face an uphill task in mounting a successful national campaign.

Wanga’s remarks came a day after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna unveiled The Equitable Party (TEP), the political vehicle through which he is expected to pursue his presidential ambitions in 2027.

Sifuna has stepped up his political activities in recent weeks following his differences with ODM. He has also moved closer to the Linda Mwananchi movement, where his name has increasingly been associated with efforts to field him as a presidential candidate.

However, Wanga maintained that the opposition was yet to demonstrate the level of cohesion witnessed during the political leadership of the late Raila Odinga. She suggested that the absence of a unifying figure could make it difficult for opposition parties and leaders to settle on one candidate capable of mounting a formidable national challenge.

The ODM chairperson also cautioned that time was running out for opposition leaders to make a decision. She noted that a presidential candidate requires sufficient time to tour the country, establish grassroots networks and introduce their agenda to voters.

According to Wanga, President William Ruto already enjoys an advantage because he has consistently travelled across the country and engaged voters and local leaders.

Sifuna’s TEP launch attracted significant attention, although several prominent opposition figures were absent. Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma questioned the absence of leaders such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, Martha Karua and Fred Matiang’i.

Meanwhile, ODM has announced several political activities across the country in October, including a major Nairobi rally scheduled for October 31, as political alignments ahead of 2027 continue to take shape.
