Two investigative journalists also briefed the commission about the case, saying it could have been resolved at an early stage if evidence had been properly retrieved from Ali’s mobile phone. They alleged that the phone was locked after an incorrect password was entered. They said important evidence, including Ali’s final messages to his parents, could potentially have been recovered from the device.

Muhammad Riaz, who lives near the location of the incident and works as a watchman at a nearby house, appeared before the commission and recorded his statement.

Responding to questions from the commission, Riaz said that on the night of the incident, at around 3:24 to 3:28am, he was on the rooftop smoking a cigarette when he noticed two vehicles, one small and one large.

He said that when he looked again, someone appeared to be trying to drive one of the vehicles up a steep incline.

When asked by Justice Omar Sial whether he had seen anyone at the scene, Riaz said there was one man who allegedly used abusive language while complaining that the car was unable to go up.

Riaz told the commission that both vehicles were white and said he had not seen those vehicles in the area before.

He also said that a motorcycle passed through the area around the same time.

During the proceedings, lawyer Jibran Nasir asked Riaz whether police had visited his residence. The witness said he had heard that police had come and questioned his children.

Nasir also told the commission that details of a suspicious vehicle had been provided to police. He said the vehicle was reportedly registered in the name of a person identified as Tariq.
