Nationwide Teacher Strike Still in Motion After Talks End Without Deal Today, October 6, 2026

According to a report by JoyNews on Tuesday October 6, 2026, the nationwide strike by pre-tertiary teacher unions remains in force after renewed negotiations between the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Ghana Education Service (GES), and the teacher unions ended without an agreement.

The parties met on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, as part of efforts to resolve the issues that led to the industrial action. However, the meeting did not produce the concrete commitments the unions were seeking.

The FWSC, GES, and the teacher unions are expected to meet again on Wednesday, October 7, to continue discussions and find a way to resolve the dispute.

One of the major issues discussed is the processing of outstanding data for teachers who have been promoted. The data is needed to facilitate the payment of promotion arrears owed to affected teachers.

Speaking after Tuesday’s meeting, General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Thomas Musa, urged teachers to remain firm while the unions await clear timelines from the government.

He explained that the unions want specific commitments on when the outstanding processes would be completed and when teachers would receive their payments.

The strike has affected teaching and learning in public pre-tertiary schools across the country. The unions have maintained that they need concrete measures and timelines from the government before they will consider suspending the strike.

The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has earlier appealed to the striking teachers to return to the classroom. He assured them that the government was committed to addressing their concerns.

He also announced that the 20 per cent deprived-area allowance would be paid after the validation of eligible teachers is completed.

With Tuesday’s negotiations ending without a deal, attention is now focused on Wednesday’s meeting, where the unions are expected to push for clear timelines on the outstanding processes and payments.
