Barani and Malu, two female Sumatran tiger cubs born at Fort Worth Zoo, were named after their personalities. The names are more than cute labels. They deliberately point back to Indonesia, and specifically the island of Sumatra, the only place in the world where Sumatran tigers are found naturally.Image: https://www.fortworthzoo.org/
There is something striking about watching two tiny cubs born thousands of miles from their native forest being given names from the language of their wild home.Fort Worth Zoo chose Indonesian-inspired names as a nod to the cubs’ origins. The Washington Post has previously noted the cultural significance of Indonesian names for Sumatran tigers. In 2001, the National Zoo named another Sumatran tiger cub Berani, an Indonesian word meaning “brave”, after a public naming contest. The new cub named Barani carries the same meaning: brave. And in her case, the name appears to fit almost too well. She is the smaller of the sisters but is reportedly the one more likely to start a wrestling match. Her sister Malu has a completely different temperament, quieter, more cautious and happy to spend time alone.
That connection matters because these are not ordinary tiger cubs.Sumatran tigers are critically endangered, with fewer than 650 believed to remain in the wild, according to the zoo and recent reports. Their survival is threatened by habitat loss, deforestation and other pressures on their Indonesian forest habitat. So when a zoo gives a Sumatran tiger an Indonesian name, it can serve as a reminder that the animal belongs to a much larger conservation story.Barani and Malu were born in Fort Worth, Texas. Their biological and cultural connection, however, leads back to Sumatra. Representational images
Malu is an Indonesian word associated with being shy, bashful or reserved. The name was chosen because of the cub’s behaviour. While Barani is busy initiating games, Malu reportedly prefers her own space and sometimes retreats to a neighbouring stall for a quiet nap.It gives the sisters almost storybook personalities: one is the bold troublemaker, the other the quiet observer. And those personalities are already visible while they are still very young.Representational image
The sisters were born on July 1, 2026, to first-time mother Ndari and father Rakan. They are the first Sumatran tiger cubs ever born at Fort Worth Zoo and the first tiger cubs of any kind born there since 2008.Their arrival also marks a new chapter for the zoo’s tiger programme. The zoo’s Predators of Asia & Africa habitat opened in 2023 after an expansion that doubled the size of the previous tiger habitat. The redesigned space was created with conservation and breeding in mind, including room and features suited to Sumatran tigers. The zoo also participates in a cooperative Sumatran tiger breeding programme with other North American zoos, aimed at maintaining a genetically diverse population under human care.Representational images
