La Pleasure Beach Demolition: Management Reveals When the Beach Will Reopen
Management of La Pleasure Beach has announced plans to reopen the facility within three weeks, following the demolition of several structures at the beach.
The demolition exercise was carried out by the National Security on Friday, October 2, after the Labadi Beach Hotel requested the removal of structures it considered to be encroachments on its beachfront.
The operation led to the destruction of several structures and businesses operating within the area.
Communications Director of La Pleasure Beach, Abdul Rahman Ashittey, said the reopening timeline would largely depend on how quickly the demolished structures and debris are cleared and essential facilities are restored.
Speaking to Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, Mr Ashittey said management expects the cleanup exercise to be completed within the week.
Once the area has been cleared, work will begin on installing ticket booths and toilet facilities to prepare the beach for reopening.
He indicated that if the cleanup proceeds as scheduled, the necessary restoration work could be completed within three weeks.
Mr Ashittey also disclosed that management has begun engaging vendors operating at the facility to ensure that permanent structures are not erected when activities resume.
He explained that the discussions are aimed at preventing a recurrence of the situation that resulted in the recent demolition exercise while allowing businesses to continue operating within an organised framework.
The Communications Director further stressed the importance of La Pleasure Beach to the local community, particularly its contribution to community development initiatives.
According to him, revenue generated from activities at the beach has supported the establishment of a development fund used to finance projects within the La community.
He therefore raised concerns about the potential impact of a prolonged closure on the community’s ability to generate funds for development.
Mr Ashittey said management has engaged key stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the dispute and ensure the beach can operate under an arrangement acceptable to all parties.
The engagements have reportedly involved the National Security Coordinator, the Regional Minister, the Minister for Local Government, the Chief of La and management of the Labadi Beach Hotel.
