Instagram tests AI-powered song creation feature

The feature, first spotted by social media creator Jonah Manzano, allows users to generate an AI-powered track by writing their own lyrics and selecting a music genre. Once the prompts are submitted, Instagram generates a complete song that users can share with friends through DMs.
According to Meta, the feature is designed as a “fun engagement option,” giving users another way to add humor, creativity and personalization to their conversations.
The song-generation tool remains in the testing phase, and Meta has not announced when it will become widely available. The company also has yet to confirm whether the feature will be rolled out globally. Early indications suggest it could be offered as part of Instagram’s standard DM experience rather than being restricted to a paid subscription.
Instagram’s potential decision to make its version available for free highlights the growing competition among social media platforms to incorporate generative AI into everyday communication. Free access could also help Instagram appeal to younger users who increasingly discover, create and share music through social platforms.
The move is part of Instagram’s broader push to bring AI-powered creativity into Direct Messages. Earlier this year, the platform introduced AI voice effects that allow users to transform voice notes using different styles and tones.

In February 2025, Instagram also expanded music sharing in DMs, allowing users to send 30-second song previews from its music library in group chats and broadcast channels.
Meta has also invested heavily in generative AI for audio and music. Its AudioCraft research project includes MusicGen, an AI model capable of generating music from text prompts.
While the technology demonstrates Meta’s ability to create AI-generated music, the company has not confirmed whether MusicGen or another model is powering Instagram’s new DM feature.
Instagram’s experiment reflects a wider shift across the social media industry, with platforms increasingly integrating AI-generated music into messaging, entertainment and content-creation tools. If the feature moves beyond testing, creating a personalized song could become another way Instagram users interact and communicate without leaving the app.
