Immigration showdown: How Labor, the Coalition and One Nation plan to dramatically reshape who comes to Australia

Net overseas migration would be slashed from annual levels of about 300,000 people to 100,000 people in the first year of a coalition government.

Net migration would stay at 100,000 for a second year before rising to 130,00 the year after and then 160,000.

The number of temporary visa holders would be reduced by 650,000 people over four years.

Temporary graduate visas would be scrapped, while student visa numbers would be reduced from 528,000 to 456,000.

Australia’s humanitarian intake would also be halved to 10,000 people, with onshore applicants having 30 days to lodge an application.

The number of working holiday maker visas would also be cut by 23,700, but an extra 15,000 skilled visas would be created for major projects.

A new agriculture visa will come into effect from 2030.

The government previously unveiled a target of net overseas migration of 245,000 in July 2027 and 225,000 each year thereafter.

Labor sought to make reductions by limiting international students and those on graduate visas from bringing family members to Australia, with exceptions for PhD students and those from Pacific countries.

Those who overstay their visa will be sent to detention facilities.

The number of working holiday makers able to stay for a second year will be limited to 45,000, down from 57,000, while those looking for a third year will be capped at 5000, down from 31,000.

Migrants coming to work in construction, farming, fisheries, mining and teaching will be prioritised.

International students took the brunt of the cuts, with visa grants set to be reduced from more than 290,000 to 115,000 per year
