Horror as woman is allegedly stabbed in the neck by a stranger while getting off a Melbourne tram

A woman was allegedly stabbed while getting off a tram with her dog in what’s believed to be a random attack.

Police swarmed the tram on Eastern Road in South Melbourne after the woman, aged 51, was stabbed about midday on Tuesday.

The tram was halted near Kings Way and the alleged attacker, a 37-year-old with no fixed address, was arrested just metres from the crime scene.

He was being interviewed by police on Tuesday afternoon. No charges have been laid as of 6pm Tuesday.

Witnesses alleged they recalled seeing the man stab the woman in the neck with a kitchen utensil, either a fork or knife.

She was treated by paramedics at the scene before being rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Celeste Hall, who allegedly saw the ‘very scary’ attack, said Melbourne’s inner-city felt increasingly unsafe.

‘What’s going on in Melbourne? Why are people doing that? It’s scary for kids, too,’ she told the Herald Sun.

‘I’ve got two kids, they catch the tram to school. But you don’t know what’s going to happen.

‘There’s so many things going on, people stealing cars, stabbings, murders. It’s crazy.’

Another witness, Liz Oxenbury, said the attack made her ‘scared to catch a tram’.

Anyone who witnessed or has information about the incident was urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
