GPL Match Day 5 Delivers Drama & Tight Finishes

Round Five of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League produced another competitive set of fixtures, with narrow victories, dramatic comebacks and two goalless draws highlighting the tight nature of the competition. Medeama SC strengthened their position at the summit, while Asante Kotoko returned to winning ways and Hearts of Oak were held to another draw.

Asante Kotoko bounced back from their previous setback with a narrow 1-0 victory over Karela United at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Isaac Opoku Agyemang scored the only goal of the match, giving the Porcupine Warriors the advantage and providing the foundation for an important home victory. Kotoko were unable to add to their lead, but their defensive organization helped them protect the result until the final whistle.

For Karela United, the defeat was another disappointing outcome as they struggled to find an equaliser despite their efforts in the second half. Kotoko, meanwhile, will be encouraged by the three points as they look to build momentum.

Hearts of Oak were forced to settle for a point after a goalless draw against Dreams FC at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

The Phobians struggled to turn their opportunities into goals as Dreams FC maintained a disciplined defensive shape. Neither side could find the decisive moment, resulting in a share of the spoils.

For Hearts, the draw was another missed opportunity to strengthen their position after their previous defeat. Dreams, however, can take encouragement from keeping a clean sheet against one of the league’s traditional giants.

Vision FC and Bibiani Gold Stars also played out a goalless draw at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex.

Both teams found it difficult to create clear-cut chances, with the respective defenses remaining organized throughout the encounter. Gold Stars were unable to find the attacking spark needed to secure victory, while Vision FC also lacked the finishing touch.

The result gives both sides a point, although Gold Stars will feel they could have taken more from the match. Vision FC, meanwhile, will be satisfied with a clean sheet and a result against a competitive opponent.

Aduana FC staged a comeback to defeat Swedru All Blacks 2-1 at the Nana Agyemang Badu II Park.

Williams Dankwah gave the visitors an early lead after just four minutes, putting Aduana on the back foot. The hosts responded through Stephen Amankona, who equalized in the 38th minute.

Amankona then completed the comeback from the penalty spot in the 86th minute to give Aduana all three points. Swedru All Blacks’ task became even harder after Zayat Abubakari was sent off.

Basake Holy Stars secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Berekum Chelsea at the AAK II Sports Arena.

Francis Asante scored as early as the sixth minute to give Holy Stars the lead. Despite having the majority of the match to respond, Chelsea could not find a way through the home defense.

Holy Stars managed the game effectively after taking the lead, securing another valuable three points. For Berekum Chelsea, the defeat highlighted their struggles in front of goal and extended their difficult start to the campaign.

Defending champions Medeama SC moved to the top of the league after edging debutants Debibi United 1-0 at the Debibi Presby Park.

The two teams went into the break level, with Debibi United successfully frustrating Medeama’s attacking efforts. The breakthrough finally came in the 69th minute when Nana Kofi Babil scored the decisive goal.

Medeama then held firm to secure another important victory and a clean sheet. The result demonstrated the champions’ ability to grind out results in difficult away fixtures.

For Debibi United, the defeat was a setback, but their performance against the defending champions showed their competitiveness despite being new to the top flight.

Heart of Lions edged FC AshantiGold 3-2 in one of the round’s most entertaining encounters at the Kpando Stadium.

William Oduro put AshantiGold ahead in the 19th minute, but Raphael Kwame Junior Ankamah quickly restored parity. Francis Odoom then gave Lions the lead before Oduro scored his second to make it 2-2.

Ankamah completed his brace in the second half to put Heart of Lions back in front, and this time they held on for the victory.

The five-goal contest highlighted the attacking quality of both sides.

Port City FC recorded an impressive 3-1 victory over Bechem United at the Nana Boamah Darko II Park.

Hamza Zakari opened the scoring in the 18th minute before Owusu Ansah doubled Port City’s advantage in the 34th minute. Bechem United responded through Francis Acquah early in the second half, briefly giving themselves hope of a comeback.

Ansah, however, restored Port City’s two-goal advantage just three minutes later, completing his brace and securing a convincing victory.

The result further underlined Port City’s strong start to their debut Premier League campaign, while Bechem United will have to address their defensive lapses.

FC Samartex maintained their strong start with a 1-0 victory over Young Apostles at the Nsenkyire Sports Complex.

Christian Agyenim Boateng scored the only goal in the 45th minute, giving Samartex the advantage just before half-time.

Young Apostles had the second half to respond but could not find an equaliser as Samartex defended their lead to secure all three points.

The result keeps Samartex among the early pace-setters, while Young Apostles will be disappointed by their inability to turn their second-half efforts into a goal.

Round Five once again showed how competitive the Ghana Premier League has become, with several matches decided by fine margins.
