Gladys Wanga Speaks on Oburu Oginga’s Health Amid Death Rumours
ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga has addressed rumours circulating online about the health of party leader Oburu Oginga.
The rumours spread on social media on Tuesday, October 6, with some posts falsely claiming that the Siaya Senator had died. However, Wanga said she had spoken to Oburu and confirmed that he was alive.
Wanga said she had been with the ODM leader in the evening and found him in good spirits. She added that Oburu was recovering steadily after his recent medical trip abroad and a routine check-up in Nairobi.
“My PL Dr Oburu is recovering steadily. I was with him this evening, and he is in high spirits. We continue to pray for his full recovery,” Wanga said.
Her statement came hours after ODM Communications Director Philip Etale also dismissed reports that Oburu had been rushed to hospital.
Etale said he had spoken to Oburu and confirmed that the senator had visited Nairobi Hospital for a routine check-up. He urged Kenyans to verify information before sharing reports about the veteran politician’s health.
Oburu recently returned to Kenya after spending several weeks in the United Kingdom, where he had gone for medical checks. He had earlier said the trip was undertaken on the advice of his doctors and also allowed him to rest and recuperate.
The latest rumours are not the first false reports about Oburu’s death. In September, Africa Check investigated similar claims and found them to be false. It noted that misleading videos had been circulated online to support the claims.
Oburu’s health has attracted public attention because of his position as ODM leader and Siaya Senator. His reduced political activity has also prompted discussions about the party’s operations.
For now, Wanga’s statement provides reassurance that Oburu is alive and recovering. ODM officials have asked the public to avoid spreading unverified information about his condition as he continues his recovery.
