Gauteng police opened a murder and attempted-murder investigation following the fatal shooting of an alleged associate of fired deputy Crime Intelligence boss Feroz Khan.

The shooting incident took place Monday evening on the R21 in the direction of OR Tambo International Airport, while another person was wounded in the attack.

Police said the incident unfolded after a Fiat reportedly broke down on the highway and the driver contacted a friend for assistance.

The friend arrived with two other people. As they attended to the vehicle, shots were fired at the group.

The driver tried to escape the gunfire but lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into a jersey barrier. He sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

“One passenger sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to hospital for medical treatment, while the third occupant managed to escape unharmed,” police said.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and no arrests have been made.

Police said investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.

The killing comes as Khan is due to testify in camera before the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday.

Khan’s evidence is expected to be heard behind closed doors, but police have not indicated that his appearance before the commission is linked to the shooting.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.
