Duncan-Williams Shócks Ghanaians As He Goes After Popular NPP Member, Sues Him For Defamation

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams has taken New Patriotic Party Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, to court over remarks he allegedly made about the Archbishop during a television programme.

Duncan-Williams is seeking GH¢10 million in damages in a suit filed at the Accra High Court. His lawyers contend that Abronye’s alleged statements were defamatory and caused significant damage to the Archbishop’s reputation.

The dispute reportedly arose after Abronye appeared on Ohia TV and allegedly described Duncan-Williams as an “armed robber.” The Archbishop’s legal representatives have rejected the allegation, arguing that it was made without credible evidence.

Duncan-Williams’ lawyer, Dr. Ernest Danquah, said on GBC1’s Focus that the statement was false and capable of causing serious reputational harm. He added that the case demonstrates the need for public figures to take responsibility for statements they make, especially when such comments can have serious consequences for others.

Abronye is also reportedly involved in a separate defamation case filed by broadcaster and lawyer Samson Lardy Anyenini, who is seeking GH¢20 million over unrelated comments.

The NPP has sought to distance itself from the controversy. General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said Abronye’s comments were his personal views and should not be interpreted as the official position of the party.

The development has sparked debate over whether the NPP should take disciplinary action against Abronye or allow the courts to determine the matter. Some members of the public have called for greater accountability, while others believe the legal process should be allowed to run its course.

The Duncan-Williams case will now be determined by the court based on the evidence and arguments presented by both sides.
