Dar Guterres Discuss Regional and Global Peace Security
The discussions covered Palestine, Jammu and Kashmir, Afghanistan, counter-terrorism and the future of multilateralism.
Dar briefed Guterres on Pakistan’s position on Jammu and Kashmir and the Indus Waters Treaty, reiterating Islamabad’s call for a just and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
The deputy prime minister also highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue and de-escalation, including its facilitation of talks in Islamabad between the United States and Iran.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the most effective means of resolving disputes.
According to the Foreign Office, Guterres appreciated Pakistan’s longstanding contribution to the United Nations and its diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue, mediation and de-escalation.
The UN secretary-general arrived in Islamabad early Tuesday for an official visit at Dar’s invitation.
During his stay, Guterres is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
He is also scheduled to visit the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) and attend a briefing at the National Disaster Management Authority headquarters.
According to the Foreign Office, the visit will highlight Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen multilateralism, international peace and security, disaster preparedness and early-warning capabilities.
The visit also provides an opportunity for Pakistan and the United Nations to exchange views on major regional and international developments and reaffirm their longstanding cooperation.
