The serious crash happened shortly after 23:30 on the Pietermaritzburg-bound N3 just before the Richmond Road offramp.

Sources with knowledge of the circumstances told SA Trucker that the light motor vehicle was travelling on the wrong side of the road when it collided with the car carrier.

The impact sent the car carrier out of control before it crashed into a bridge, leaving its driver severely trapped inside the truck cabin.

ALS Paramedics responded to the scene, where paramedics were confronted with what spokesperson Garrith Jamieson described as a serious crash.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find chaos and carnage as a car carrier had collided with a light motor vehicle before losing control and colliding with a bridge,” said Jamieson.

The driver of the light motor vehicle, a man believed to be in his 40s, sustained major injuries in the collision.

“There was unfortunately nothing paramedics could do for him and he was declared deceased on the scene,” Jamieson said.

The truck driver was found severely trapped in the wreckage, prompting the deployment of the eThekwini Fire Department to assist with the rescue.

According to Jamieson, firefighters worked for approximately two hours to free the trapped driver while Advanced Life Support paramedics worked to stabilise him inside the truck cabin.

“The man had sustained critical injuries and, once freed, was carefully extricated and placed into an awaiting ALS Paramedics ambulance,” said Jamieson.

The truck driver was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment.

The crash caused a major emergency response on the N3, with the heavy impact leaving the car carrier badly damaged after it collided with the bridge.

The circumstances that led to the crash remain under investigation.
