Big Blow To Uhuru, Gachagua, Kalonzo And Fred Matiang’i After Natembeya Releases This Statement

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has intensified the debate over the 2027 presidential contest, urging opposition leaders to pay greater attention to grassroots opinion rather than relying solely on negotiations among senior political figures.

Natembeya has thrown his support behind Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s growing political profile, arguing that the views of ordinary Kenyans should play a central role in determining who eventually carries the opposition presidential ticket.

The governor’s position comes amid increasingly intense discussions within opposition circles over how to settle on a single candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election. Different political leaders have been positioning themselves for the ticket, while negotiations continue over a possible united opposition arrangement.

Recent political developments have placed Sifuna at the centre of those discussions. A July TIFA poll cited by The Star showed Sifuna’s support among opposition supporters rising from 10 per cent in May to 15 per cent in June, while Kalonzo Musyoka stood at 13 per cent and Fred Matiang’i at 14 per cent. However, other polling has produced different results, underscoring that the opposition contest remains unsettled.

Natembeya has maintained that political parties and senior leaders should not assume that presidential nominations can simply be determined in boardrooms without considering public sentiment. His remarks reflect the growing argument within opposition politics that grassroots mobilisation and voter support will be important factors in deciding the eventual candidate.

Sifuna himself has previously been cautious about making a final presidential declaration. In July, he said he wanted to take the Linda Mwananchi movement across all 47 counties before deciding whether to seek the presidency, saying he needed to establish whether the support witnessed in some areas was genuinely national.

By September, however, Sifuna had publicly indicated that he wanted to challenge President William Ruto in 2027, citing feedback from his nationwide political engagements.

Natembeya has also said that Sifuna could contest under the United Democratic Party or through a broader opposition coalition being developed for the election.

The governor’s intervention adds another dimension to an already complex opposition debate involving Kalonzo, Matiang’i, Rigathi Gachagua, Eugene Wamalwa and other political figures. While some leaders continue to advocate for experienced principals, Sifuna’s emergence has created pressure for a new approach to candidate selection.

With coalition negotiations continuing, the central question remains how opposition leaders will reconcile individual ambitions, party interests and grassroots demands before settling on a common presidential ticket.
