Barack and Michelle Obama Celebrate 34th Anniversary Amid Divorce Rumors
Nationwide — Barack and Michelle Obama are celebrating 34 years of marriage with affectionate messages that also put to rest renewed speculation about their relationship. The former president and first lady marked their Oct. 3 anniversary by sharing personal photos and memories from their decades together. Their posts come after months of public discussion about whether they were headed for divorce.
Barack shared a photo of himself embracing Michelle while looking at her with a smile. In his anniversary message, he said he was still the “luckiest guy in the world” to be with her. Michelle took a different approach, posting a montage filled with photos and videos from their life together. The collection included memories from their 1992 wedding, Barack’s presidency, family moments, vacations, and more recent appearances, as reported by Page Six.
Michelle also used the anniversary post to reflect on how their relationship has changed over time. She said loving Barack “just keeps getting better and better” and looked ahead to more years of happiness, laughter and shared memories. The couple also exchanged similar messages when they celebrated their 33rd anniversary in 2025. At the time, Barack called marrying Michelle the best decision he had ever made, while she said she loved him even more than she did when they first said “I do.”
Their latest celebration comes after divorce rumors gained attention last year. Michelle was notably absent when Barack attended former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and later when Donald Trump was sworn in as president. Her decision to skip the inauguration led to increased speculation about the couple’s marriage. Reports at the time said she intentionally stayed away and was spending an extended vacation in Hawaii.
The couple later addressed the rumors during a July 2025 episode of Michelle and her brother Craig Robinson’s podcast, IMO. Robinson joked about the speculation by asking whether the Obamas still liked each other. Barack responded with humor, saying Michelle had “took me back” after a period when things were “touch and go.” Michelle then told him not to start before explaining that people often assume they are divorced whenever they are not seen together.
Michelle has also offered a more serious explanation for how their marriage has lasted through difficult periods. She has acknowledged that the couple has experienced plenty of “ups and downs,” but said she feels secure knowing Barack will support her when she takes risks or faces setbacks. The couple married in 1992 and went on to raise two daughters, Malia and Sasha. After more than three decades together, their 34th anniversary celebration shows the two continuing to publicly acknowledge their marriage despite the speculation that has surrounded them.
