Asiedu Nkietiah Sends A Strong Warning Against Removing Two-Term President Limit

National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has called for the preservation of Ghana’s constitutional limit on presidential tenure, warning against any reforms that could weaken the restriction.

He described the two-term limit as an important safeguard for Ghana’s democratic system, arguing that it helps prevent excessive concentration of executive authority and ensures that political leaders eventually give way to new administrations.

Asiedu Nketiah stressed that constitutional provisions governing presidential tenure should not be altered simply to accommodate individual political interests. In his view, maintaining clear and enforceable limits is essential to ensuring that Ghana’s political system remains guided by institutions and established laws rather than personalities.

Under the 1992 Constitution, a president may serve a maximum of two four-year terms. Once those terms have been completed, the individual is constitutionally barred from seeking another presidential mandate.

The NDC chairman believes the restriction also encourages political parties to cultivate new leadership and prepare for orderly changes in government. By preventing prolonged incumbency, term limits can create opportunities for fresh political ideas and reduce the risk of executive power becoming overly concentrated in one individual.

Ghana’s Fourth Republic has recorded several peaceful transfers of power through competitive elections, with the constitutional term limit forming part of the framework supporting political succession.

His comments come amid wider discussions about possible constitutional reforms and the future of Ghana’s governance system. Asiedu Nketiah cautioned that any proposed changes should be carefully considered to ensure they do not weaken institutional safeguards intended to protect democratic stability.

He argued that preserving democracy involves more than conducting elections at regular intervals. Strong constitutional protections, respect for institutional limits and the willingness to allow leadership to change are equally important to maintaining a stable democratic system.

The NDC chairman’s position therefore adds to the ongoing national debate over presidential tenure and constitutional reform, with the two-term limit remaining a key feature of Ghana’s system of executive succession.
