Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Ibadan, John Ayoade, has weighed in on possible political developments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, including speculation that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar could eventually withdraw from the race. According to the university don, different scenarios are currently being considered within political circles as major political figures and their supporters make preparations for the election. Ayoade specifically referred to a rumour that Atiku could step aside, potentially setting up a direct presidential battle between former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and incumbent President Bola Tinubu.

“There is a rumour that maybe eventually Atiku will step down, so that it will be Obi versus Tinubu,” he said. However, Ayoade presented the possibility strictly as a rumour, rather than a confirmed development. The political scientist also highlighted the role of influential political figures who may not hold major government positions but can still have significant influence over political decisions and arrangements. He noted that such power brokers could play an important role in determining the political direction ahead of the 2027 election, including influencing which candidates remain in the race and how alliances are formed.

Ayoade further stressed that Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the election remains uncertain and subject to change. He said rumours, negotiations, strategic calculations and political realignments are likely to continue as parties and prominent politicians position themselves for the contest. He added that the various scenarios being discussed show that the final shape of the 2027 presidential race has not yet been settled and could depend on decisions taken by key political actors in the coming months. His comments come amid growing political discussions involving Tinubu, Obi, Atiku and other potential contenders as preparations for the 2027 presidential election intensify.
