Wicknell Chivayo and Wife to Be Buried Without Heads After Helicopter Crash, Zimbabweans Debate Move

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, are set to be buried on Thursday, 8 October 2026, following their tragic deaths in a helicopter crash.

The couple will be laid to rest side by side at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare. However, the circumstances surrounding the condition of their remains have left many Zimbabweans shocked and questioning what happened at the crash site.

Family spokesman and Chivayo’s uncle, Herbert Chivayo, confirmed that the couple’s bodies were severely burnt in the accident and that forensic investigators were unable to recover their heads.

Herbert Chivayo addressed speculation surrounding the condition of the victims’ remains and dismissed claims circulating on social media that the victims’ heads had been recovered.

He explained that forensic investigators initially believed some recovered fragments could have been skull remains. However, further examination reportedly established that the fragments were not human skulls.

Herbert said the victims had been exposed to jet fuel before the aircraft caught fire following the crash, resulting in extensive damage to the bodies.

He stressed that no heads were recovered from the scene.

The revelation has added to the grief surrounding the deaths, while also prompting intense discussion among members of the public.

Chivayo and Lucy were among five people who died when a Bell 430 helicopter crashed on 30 September 2026.

The other victims were identified as Senelisiwe Magagula, Captain Kelvin T Soda and Captain Courage Mutavirwa.

The helicopter reportedly went down at around 5pm at Kudenga Farm in Marondera Rural, near Waddilove Mission, approximately 70 kilometres east of Harare.

The aircraft had taken off from Chivayo’s rural homestead in Gandami Village in Chikomba district at about 4:20pm. It was travelling towards Harare, with a planned stop in Marondera.

Misty conditions were reportedly present around the time of the crash.

According to the family, the impact and subsequent fire caused extensive damage to the victims’ remains, making identification and recovery particularly difficult.

News that Chivayo and Lucy would be buried without their heads sparked an emotional response on social media.

Some Zimbabweans expressed disbelief and questioned whether the explanation provided by the family and investigators accounted for everything that happened at the crash site.

Others raised questions about why some items appeared to have survived the fire while the bodies were so severely burnt.

Several social media users suggested that the unusual condition of the remains warranted further investigation, while others questioned whether there could have been circumstances surrounding the crash that had not yet been made public.

However, these online theories remain speculation and have not been established as facts.

The family’s confirmation remains that no heads were recovered from the crash site.

Amid the tragedy, the family confirmed that Chivayo’s two children from his previous marriage were not aboard the helicopter and were safe.

The deaths of Chivayo and Lucy have since triggered widespread mourning in Zimbabwe, with attention also focused on the businessman’s public legacy and the circumstances surrounding his final journey.

Their burial at Glen Forest Cemetery is expected to bring together family members, friends and mourners as they say their final goodbyes.

The couple’s deaths have left their families facing a devastating loss, while the condition of their remains has added an especially difficult dimension to an already tragic event.

As Zimbabwe prepares for their burial on Thursday, questions surrounding the crash and the recovery of the victims’ remains continue to generate debate, even as relatives prepare to lay the couple to rest.
