Standing in their way were the Kansas City Chiefs, who overcame two injuries to crucial wide receivers and ended up winning the game on the road 30-27.
Sunday’s game was a true thriller. It was a back-and-forth contest all throughout, with the Chiefs taking the first two-score lead of the game late in the fourth quarter, directly after a Raiders turnover. Las Vegas made it a three-point game in the final two minutes, but it wasn’t enough to avoid defeat.
In reality, the Raiders have nothing to be upset about. They lost to an undefeated Chiefs team with Patrick Mahomes and Kenneth Walker in elite form. But Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak could be kicking himself for possibly kicking the hornet’s nest while his team was leading.
The Raiders went into halftime with a 13-10 lead, and were set to get the ball to begin the second half. That had Kubiak feeling very optimistic. So much so that he told CBS Sports reporter Tracy Wolfson during his halftime interview that “we’re gonna win the game”.
It was a surprising show of overwhelming confidence from Kubiak. Ultimately, it didn’t come to fruition. But when asked if he had any regrets about making that statement, Kubiak didn’t feel the need to walk it back: “That’s just how I felt”.
Raiders fans were loving Kubiak’s conviction. It might not have worked out this time around, but it’s clear the head coach has already changed the culture and mentality of the franchise.
