The Bachelor star Dr Matt Agnew speaks out about taking a stand against violence – shortly before series veteran Sam Wood was arrested and denied bail

The Bachelor alum Dr Matt Agnew recently made a telling post in which he took a stand against men – just days before series veteran Sam Wood was charged with domestic violence offences and refused bail.

The 39-year-old series veteran, who appeared on the Channel Ten series in 2019, shared a post on social media in which he said people had a responsibility to call out men who hurt others.

‘They’re not monsters. Calling them monsters is convenient. Easy. Monsters are something OTHER. Something dark. depraved. Inhuman,’ Agnew began.

‘Something other men can point at and say: That’s not me, that’s not us. And that distance is comforting. It lets us believe this has nothing to do with us. But these aren’t monsters. They’re men. Men doing monstrous things, yes, but still men.’

He said that the public conversation needed to change regarding men who hurt others in order to help prevent future incidents.

‘When we turn them into monsters we give ourselves permission to look away. Because the truth is uglier. More confronting. Men did this,’ he added.

‘As men, we have a responsibility to stop it. Being a “good man” can’t just mean not being the man who commits the heinous act. That is the absolute f***ing floor. Silence gives these men cover. It protects them. It gives violence room to happen.

‘Men, it’s on us to act. To intervene. To hold men accountable. Not because they’re monsters. Because they’re men.’

His post came just days before Wood, who appeared on the Ten series in 2015, was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence) and strangulation in a domestic setting after Queensland Police were called to an address in Noosa at about 9pm on Saturday.

Wood has been stood down indefinitely from his multi-million-dollar fitness and nutrition empire after being charged.

The 46-year-old did not appear in court in Queensland on Monday and is set to remain behind bars until a bail application on Thursday.

The company behind his 28 by Sam Wood fitness business has issued a statement addressing the allegations, confirming the reality TV star would be taking a hiatus from his duties.

‘DBG Health, the parent company of 28 by Sam Wood, has zero tolerance for domestic violence,’ a DBG Health spokesperson said.

‘While the matter is under investigation and before the court, Sam Wood is on indefinite leave from his duties. Our thoughts are with the family and anyone in the community affected by domestic violence,’ they said.

DBG Health, owned by billionaire Dennis Bastas, is also behind medical weight-loss business Ollo For Women.

Wood will remain behind bars after his domestic violence case was adjourned while his lawyers prepare a bail application and his defence against the charges.

Wood did not appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday, with the matter instead dealt with by his lawyer, Mathew Cuskelly.

Mr Cuskelly asked for the case to be relisted on Thursday, when Wood is expected to apply for bail.

The celebrity fitness trainer will remain in the local watchhouse until at least Thursday, when the case is due to return to court.

The multi-millionaire, who has three children with his wife, Snezana, was arrested on Saturday after police attended a property on Noosa’s main street, where he was staying while on holiday.

A police spokesperson said officers attended the Hastings Street address at about 9pm on Saturday after receiving reports of alleged domestic violence.

Mr Cuskelly said Wood intends to defend the charges and that he would speak to him again later today after visiting him in the watchhouse last night.

He added Wood was in good spirits but concerned for his family and eager to return to Victoria.

Wood’s social media follower count has also fallen dramatically, dropping by thousands amid the allegations.

The fitness entrepreneur married Snezana in an outdoor ceremony in Byron Bay in 2018.

They went on to have three children together, Willow, eight, Charlie, seven, and Harper, four.

They also co-parent Eve, 21, who is Snezana’s daughter from a previous relationship.

The Woods live in Brighton, Victoria, where they recently purchased a $7 million home in February.

The celebrity trainer funnelled his Bachelor fame into building his highly successful fitness empire.

Wood founded the fitness and training business 28 by Sam Wood, which he sold in 2022 for $71 million, and he remains the owner of The Woodshed gym in Melbourne.
