Tanzania calls on nations to turn climate finance pledges into actual funding

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA has called on developed countries to turn climate finance pledges made through global climate conferences into actual funding, saying commitments without money reaching developing countries are insufficient to meet the growing costs of climate action.

The Minister for Finance, Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar made the statement noting that investment in climate change response remained a global challenge despite various funding commitments made through COP meetings, with implementation still falling short of the actual needs of developing countries.

Speaking earlier on Monday at a Climate Finance Dialogue in Dar es Salaam, Ambassador Omar said Tanzania contributes only about 0.31 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions but continues to face the effects of climate change, making access to adequate climate finance critical.

β€œTanzania is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by between 30 and 35 per cent by 2030, a target that requires significant investment,” he said.

Additionally, he stressed that developed countries need to honour their financial commitments to support climate action in developing nations.

Elaborating, he said that Tanzania is implementing its responsibilities through the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and National Adaptation Plan (NAP), while calling on development partners to fulfil their financial pledges to enable developing countries to effectively respond to climate change impacts.
