Start of El Niño? Prepare for Heavy Rains If You Live in the Following Areas
According to the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority (KMSA), several parts of Kenya are expected to experience increased rainfall between Sunday, October 4, and Thursday, October 8, as the country enters the October-December rainy season.
The five-day forecast indicates that moderate to heavy rainfall will affect different parts of the country, including the Coast, Central Kenya, Northeastern region, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin. Some areas are also expected to experience thunderstorms during the period.
Along the Coast, Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale are forecast to receive moderate rainfall mainly in the afternoons and at night throughout the five days. Lamu is expected to record light showers in the mornings and evenings, while Taita Taveta could receive light rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday.
In Northeastern Kenya, Wajir is expected to receive morning rainfall from Sunday through Thursday. Mandera may record light showers on Monday and Tuesday, while Marsabit is forecast to experience light morning rainfall throughout the period, accompanied by additional showers at night.
Isiolo is expected to receive light afternoon showers on Sunday and Monday. Meru will experience morning rainfall throughout the forecast period, with additional light afternoon showers. Tharaka-Nithi and Embu are also expected to receive morning rains and afternoon showers.
Kitui, Machakos and Makueni are forecast to receive light morning rainfall throughout the period, followed by afternoon showers from Monday to Thursday.
In Central Kenya, Nyeri is expected to receive light rainfall on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, with moderate rainfall forecast for Tuesday morning. Kirinyaga and Murang’a are expected to experience morning rains throughout the five days.
Nairobi and Kiambu are also forecast to receive morning rainfall, with moderate afternoon showers expected on Wednesday and Thursday.
Western Kenya and the Rift Valley are expected to experience some of the more intense conditions. Trans Nzoia and Elgeyo-Marakwet may record thunderstorms from Monday to Wednesday, while Kericho, Bomet, Nandi and Baringo are also expected to experience thunderstorms.
Kakamega and Vihiga could receive afternoon rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms from Monday to Thursday. Bungoma is forecast to record afternoon rains on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, while Busia may experience similar conditions on Tuesday and Thursday.
In the Lake Victoria Basin, Siaya, Kisumu and Homa Bay are expected to receive heavy afternoon rainfall throughout the forecast period.
The forecast comes as Kenya prepares for the October-December rainfall season, with the period coinciding with projections of an El Niño event. Residents in areas expected to experience heavy rains and thunderstorms have been advised to remain alert and monitor subsequent weather updates as conditions develop.
