RIP: Tension Grips Nation as Prominent Person Dies in Fatal Accident Along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway
At least two people are feared dead after multiple vehicles were involved in separate crashes along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
The incidents happened on Sunday, October 4, along the busy highway as motorists travelled from Salama towards Sultan Hamud. Images seen on Monday, October 5, showed the extent of the damage caused by the crashes.
In one of the incidents, two trailers collided violently, leaving one tractor head badly damaged at the front. Twisted metal and debris were scattered around the scene as members of the public gathered to assist.
Several people were seen lying on the ground near the wreckage. They were either feared dead or seriously injured as efforts to rescue those affected continued.
About 200 metres from the first crash, another accident was reported. A small white Toyota Fielder was involved in the collision, with its entire front section badly crushed.
The separate crashes caused serious disruption along the highway, with traffic building up as motorists struggled to pass through the affected section.
The situation was made worse by the narrow stretch of the road. Some motorists were forced to use undesignated lanes in an attempt to get past the accident scenes.
As of Monday, October 5, authorities had not issued an official statement confirming the number of people who died or explaining what caused the crashes.
The incidents have once again highlighted the risks faced by motorists using the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, which carries heavy traffic, including many trucks and trailers.
Motorists travelling along the Salama-Sultan Hamud section have been urged to remain cautious, especially when approaching accident scenes and areas affected by congestion.
Further details are expected as authorities continue assessing the situation and confirming the casualties from the crashes.
