RIP: Last Painful Words Mombasa Bride Told Her Priest Before She Died With 16 Others at Salama

Details have emerged about what Mombasa bride Veronica Ngandi told her priest shortly before she lost her life alongside 16 other people in a road crash in Salama.

During their final conversation, Veronica told Father Patrick Mainge that her family had travelled to Kitui and completed the dowry payment. She also explained that she was heading to Subukia and planned to return with her partner to see the priest.

Father Mainge said it was heartbreaking to know that she would now have her wedding in heaven.

Veronica’s family had already finished the dowry arrangements and was preparing for her wedding, which was due to take place the following week.

She had expected to return from the pilgrimage and continue with the plans for her big day.

Sadly, she never made it back. The trip to the Subukia Marian Shrine ended in disaster when the vehicle carrying the pilgrims crashed in the Salama area of Makueni County.

The deceased were members of St Matthias Mulumba Catholic Church in Mikindani, Mombasa, who had travelled as a group for the pilgrimage. The group consisted of 16 parishioners and their driver.

Father Mainge said the pilgrims left Mombasa in high spirits. They were excited about visiting the shrine and taking part in the religious trip. Their sudden deaths left relatives, friends and fellow worshippers mourning the loss.

The priest also remembered another victim, identified as Sarah, who had spoken about the need to put her spiritual affairs in order before the journey.

Sarah reportedly said they did not want to leave this world with unsettled matters before God.

She wanted them to clear their spiritual debts so that, should death come, they would be at peace with Him.

A memorial Mass was later held at St Matthias Mulumba Catholic Church in Mikindani, bringing together hundreds of mourners who gathered to honour the 17 people who died in the crash.Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Shariff Nassir attended the service and promised that the county government would meet the burial expenses of the affected families.

The families are expected to agree on whether the remains will be buried in Mombasa or transported to their respective home counties.
