REVEALED: Why Wicknell Chivayo and Wife Lucy Muteke Will Be Buried Without Heads
Zimbabwean business tycoon Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, will be buried without their heads because the remains could not be recovered from the site of their fatal helicopter crash. Family spokesman Herbert Chivayo made the announcement on Sunday, October 4.
The couple died on Wednesday, September 30, when their helicopter went down in misty conditions at Kudenga Farm in Marondera, about forty minutes after takeoff.
They were returning from the site of a rural mansion they were building. Two pilots and a security officer also lost their lives in the crash.
According to the family, the helicopter caught fire after hitting the ground, and the bodies were believed to have been exposed to jet fuel before burning. Herbert explained that the fire burnt itself out, leaving all five victims in a severe state and beyond recognition.
He said no heads belonging to any of the victims were found, addressing speculation that had been circulating on social media. Forensic officials had earlier suspected that some recovered remains were parts of the victims’ heads, but further analysis proved otherwise.
Wicknell and Lucy will be laid to rest side by side at Glen Forest Cemetery in Harare on Thursday, October 8. The two pilots have already been buried, while the security aide is set to be buried on Monday.
Afinal message from the pilot before the crash indicated that the aircraft was struggling to clear cloud cover. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
Known popularly as Sir Wicknell, Chivayo was one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable and flamboyant public figures.
He built his name through business dealings in the energy sector, political connections and a bold social media presence that showcased luxury cars, private aircraft and generous gifts to celebrities, pastors and ordinary people.
Hours before his death, he posted about gifting two of his lawyers luxury vehicles and a large sum of cash.
His passing has drawn grief across Africa, and the country now waits to say its final goodbye.
