Residents Reveal What Happened After Ondo Helicopter Crash
According to a report by Punch on Monday, October 5, 2026, many people were feared dead after a helicopter crashed in Igbokoda, the headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The aircraft reportedly went down in a swampy part of the community, making access to the location difficult for residents and hampering efforts to immediately determine the extent of the casualties.
A source familiar with the incident said the crash occurred in the morning after residents heard a loud sound from the area. According to the source, people in the community were unable to approach the location because the helicopter had crashed inside a creek.
“It happened this morning. We heard a very loud sound in the area where the incident occurred, but we could not get there because the place is a swampy area inside the creek; we are just looking at it from afar,” the source said.
The source further disclosed that security personnel later moved to the area to commence rescue efforts. However, there were fears that some or all of the occupants of the helicopter may have died in the crash.
“But the police and the military people later came around there for rescue, but the occupants of the helicopter might have died there,” the source added.
The exact number of people who may have died in the incident was not immediately established as of the time the report was filed. The identities of the occupants and further details about the helicopter were also yet to be confirmed.
The Ondo State Police Command subsequently confirmed that an aircraft crash had occurred in the Igbokoda axis of Ilaje Local Government Area.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said investigations had commenced to establish what happened and determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“The Ondo State Police Command confirms the reported aircraft crash in the Igbokoda axis of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State on Monday, 5th October 2026. Details surrounding the incident are still emerging, as efforts to establish the full circumstances continue,” Jimoh stated.
The police spokesman appealed to residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities to remain calm while authorities worked to establish credible information about the incident.
He also cautioned members of the public against spreading unverified reports, stressing that the police would provide further information when reliable details became available.
“The public will be duly informed as soon as further credible information becomes available,” Jimoh stated.
