Passport Office HQs employees accused of stealing 138 passports sent on physical remand

ISLAMABAD  –  An Islamabad court granted two-day physical remand of three accused in a case involving the alleged theft of 138 fresh passport booklets from the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports headquarters.

The case was registered on the complaint of the Assistant Manager (Inventory), Directorate General of Immigration & Passports, Islamabad, against the accused officials.

Judicial Magistrate (West) Shaista Khan Kundi granted the remand of LDC Faisal Shabbir Khan, janitorial worker Danish Younus and private employee Atif Zakir on Saturday after the FIA sought four days for further investigation.

According to the FIA, 131 of the 138 stolen passport booklets have so far been recovered, while seven remain missing. Investigators alleged the missing booklets were supplied to Khurram Shahzad, a dismissed Passport Office superintendent in Lahore, for their alleged criminal use. Efforts are underway to arrest him and recover the remaining passports.

According to the officials, the alleged theft was captured on CCTV footage and claimed Faisal Shabbir and Danish Younus acted in connivance with each other.

During the investigation, the FIA also alleged that Shabbir was involved in processing and issuance of Pakistani identity documents and passports to Afghan nationals. Several passport token IDs were reportedly recovered from his possession and mobile phones.

The role of Atif Zakir allegedly surfaced during the probe, following which he was arrested on September 27.

The FIA sought further remand to recover the missing passports, arrest Shahzad and other alleged accomplices and confront the accused with the record.

The court granted two days’ physical remand and directed the FIA to produce the accused on October 5.

The case was registered under sections 409, 420, 468, 471 and 109 PPC, read with Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 6 of the Passport Act.
