Pakistan reports sixth polio case of year from Khyber District
Pakistan has reported its sixth polio case of the year after the virus was confirmed in a 7-year-old child from Khyber District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the National Emergency Operations Centre said.
According to the NEOC, the affected child is a resident of Union Council Ghundi-A in Tehsil Jamrud.
Five of the six polio cases reported in the country this year have emerged from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the NEOC said.
Officials said transmission of the poliovirus continues in the southern districts of the province.
Khyber, Peshawar and southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been designated high-risk areas for polio.
Following confirmation of the latest case, authorities decided to strengthen the effectiveness of vaccination activities in Khyber District.
Preparations are also underway for oral and injectable polio vaccination campaigns in high-risk areas.
Officials urged parents to ensure that children receive all recommended doses of the polio vaccine to help eradicate the disease.
