Mbule Explains Why He Chose Orlando Pirates Over Kaizer Chiefs — Here’s What He Said
Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sipho Mbule has opened up about his transfer options after leaving the club, revealing that Kaizer Chiefs were among the teams interested in signing him.
Mbule explained that his contract with Sundowns had come to an end, leaving him free to consider offers from several clubs. According to the midfielder, Chiefs were one of the teams that made an approach as he considered his next move.
“Firstly, my contract with Sundowns ended. There’s other teams also that wanted to sign me. Even Chiefs approached me…”
Despite the interest from the Amakhosi, Mbule ultimately opted to join Orlando Pirates, a decision that is likely to attract attention because of the fierce rivalry between the two Soweto giants.
The midfielder arrived at Sundowns from SuperSport United and was once regarded as one of the promising midfielders in South African football. His time with the Brazilians, however, was affected by competition for places and a lack of consistency, making it difficult for him to establish himself as a regular starter.
With his Sundowns chapter coming to an end, Mbule found himself with several options, including a possible move to Chiefs. Instead, he chose Pirates as the club where he would continue his career.
His decision adds an interesting twist to the rivalry between the two Soweto giants, particularly because players who move between or choose between Chiefs and Pirates often attract considerable attention from supporters.
Mbule could have provided Chiefs with additional strength, creativity and energy in midfield had he accepted their approach. Pirates eventually won the race for his signature, giving the midfielder an opportunity to begin a new chapter.
The revelation also highlights the difficult decisions players face when weighing offers from clubs with different ambitions, playing styles and expectations.
For Mbule, the move to Pirates represents an opportunity to revive his career and rediscover the form that previously made him one of the more highly regarded midfielders in the country.
While the midfielder has now chosen his path, his admission provides an insight into the transfer activity that took place behind the scenes and confirms that Chiefs were interested in signing him before he ultimately opted for their Soweto rivals, Pirates.
