Mahama Issues Strong Warning to NPP and Their Minority in Parliament After They Boycotted Forums

President John Dramani Mahama has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its parliamentary Minority to reconsider their decision to boycott proposed national economic engagements and instead participate in discussions aimed at finding solutions to Ghana’s economic challenges.

The President’s appeal comes amid renewed political disagreements over the management of the economy, government borrowing, expenditure and measures being introduced to restore economic stability.

Mahama has consistently advocated for broad stakeholder participation in national economic discussions. He has argued that Ghana’s economic challenges are too significant to be addressed by government alone and require contributions from political parties, organised labour, businesses, civil society and other relevant stakeholders.

The President has also previously urged the opposition to participate in national economic dialogues, recalling the NPP’s decision to stay away from the 2014 Senchi Economic Forum. His latest appeal reflects his position that political differences should not prevent parties from contributing to discussions on issues affecting the country.

The call comes as the NPP Minority continues to question the government’s borrowing and spending decisions. Nhyiaeso MP Dr Stephen Amoah has raised concerns about the level of borrowing under the current administration, including a claim that approximately GH¢59 billion had been borrowed within a relatively short period.

Amoah has also compared the borrowing figures with those recorded under the previous Akufo-Addo administration, while acknowledging the need to consider the different periods and methods used to calculate public debt.

Beyond the borrowing debate, Mahama has identified youth unemployment as another major challenge requiring urgent attention. His administration has placed youth employment and empowerment among its policy priorities as it seeks to create more opportunities for young people.

The proposed economic engagement is expected to provide a platform for stakeholders to examine public finances, economic policies, employment and other structural challenges facing the country.

Mahama believes wider participation could help build consensus and contribute to the search for sustainable measures to strengthen Ghana’s economy and improve living conditions for citizens.
