An elderly couple who won a $50million lottery jackpot ended up tearing their family apart after turning their mansion into a hoarding nightmare.

A man told the story of an old friend whose grandparents won a $50million jackpot – but the huge windfall ultimately led to their downfall.

The couple grew up ‘dirt poor’ in a small town.

After hitting the jackpot, they lived a luxurious lifestyle, splurging on a massive property with a built-in movie theatre and bowling alley, luxury cars and holidays.

‘They ended up buying one of the biggest houses in the city, some fancier cars but nothing crazy, and took vacations,’ the man said.

‘They lived as luxuriously as one would expect.’

As the mansion was 930 square metres, the couple gradually filled every room to the brim with mountains of possessions and rubbish.

‘The house ended up full to the ceiling of junk,’ he said.

‘Anything from jewellery, art, knick-knacks and garbage was absolutely everywhere. I’ve never seen such a beautiful house in that state before.

‘I guess hitting the jackpot turns people into hoarders when there’s nothing to really blow it on.’

Eventually, the hoarding caused a heated family feud, particularly over the will and cleaning up the property after their deaths.

‘It ultimately ended up destroying the family with the will and cleanup,’ the man said.

The mansion was later sold to new owners but it was in such poor condition that it needed a major renovation.

‘It had to be fully renovated to the tune of $1.5 million,’ the man added.

Meanwhile, another man revealed how one of his colleagues disappeared after winning a $5million lottery jackpot.

‘A guy I worked with said he absolutely wasn’t going to quit because $5million isn’t a lot. He paid all his debts and bought his wife any car she wanted,’ he said.

‘He took his family on vacation for three full weeks, twice at Disney World.’

The lottery winner returned to reality after taking a month off work.

‘About four days in, we’re in a big circle talking in a group. He had a thousand mile stare going and just said out loud, to no one in particular but maybe himself, “What the hell am I doing here?”‘ the colleague recalled.

‘He got up and walked out. Never saw him again.’
