Living beyond the noise

Living beyond the noise

Whether the glass is half full or half empty is, in the final analysis, entirely a function of perspective. The dimension from which we look at any situation will determine what we think about it. Perspectives shape perception. Perception shapes definitions. We hardly describe things as they are. We generally describe things as WE are. Definitions shape narratives. Narratives shape experience. And ultimately, experience shapes reality. Perception, not aesthetics, determines the success or failure of a product in the market.

Since the removal of fuel subsidy, the floating of the Naira, and the attendant challenges vis-Ć -vis the ripple effects on affordability and quality of life in Nigeria, the common refrain, which simply echoes a popular narrative, is that ā€œpeople are hungry.ā€ It is as if Nigeria has become the starvation capital of the world and a place where NOTHING works.

What most people fail to realise is that the mind is very powerful. Your repeated utterances eventually become an imprint in your mind and ultimately become the reality you reproduce. If you go through life convinced that everything around you is collapsing, your mind will diligently gather all the evidence it needs to prove you right and make you gravitate towards that direction. You will only see broken systems, incompetent leaders, unfair policies, and structural decay everywhere you look. Even when there is an alternative reality around you, you will still find faults, if only to validate your perspective. In time, you will start gravitating towards fellow naysayers who simply validate you. Before you know it, anyone who tries to steer you away from your negativity is marked for attack because he, according to you, does not understand what people are going through.

But if you train your mind to look for the leverage point—the hidden opening inside every crisis, the new business opportunities provided by the new challenges people have to deal with, the current flow of value and consequent reward—you begin to inhabit a completely different reality altogether. Instead of simply following the train of popular negativity, confront every challenge you see with a value code that solves a problem in that challenging situation. Intelligence is not a requirement for perfecting the grumbling act. This is why most people conveniently do so.

Consider the nature of nationhood. A country does not grind to a halt simply because of someone’s unbridled outrage. Nations are not built by those who spend their days throwing tantrums on the sidelines, nor are they sustained by collective online indignation. Nations are built because a small, determined group of people choose to interrogate problems, engage reality as it is, and actively exploit opportunities that come wearing the disguise of immense difficulty. They join political parties and stand for election or start a new business that solves a significant problem and, in many cases, upskill in order to be relevant to the current realities.

Meanwhile, the greater majority simply grumble into the void, complaining about the heat without ever lifting a single finger to turn on the fan. When hot, they blame their despised political leader and believe El Dorado is only possible when their favourite candidate is in government.

The departure lounge of a bustling international airport illustrates how this dynamic plays out in everyday life, step inside

The air is thick with noise. There is an endless, overwhelming cacophony of overlapping public address system announcements, rolling luggage on tile, clattering coffee cups, and thousands of voices talking over one another in a dozen different languages. You are surrounded by enticing, high-energy distractions in the waiting area—glistening duty-free shops boasting luxury goods, high-end restaurants, comfortable lounge chairs, and the hypnotic, constant flow of human movement.

In the middle of all that chaos, you have one primary responsibility: you must be able to distinguish the clear, specific announcement of your flight and your boarding gate.

If you fail to tune your ears to what really matters, those attractive distractions and ambient conversations will cost you dearly. They become the exact line between reaching your destination and getting stranded in the lounge long after your flight has taken off without you. And make no mistake: when you miss your flight because you were distracted by the noise, you cannot simply stroll into the next available plane. Not every flight idling on the tarmac is headed where you need to go. Boarding the wrong aircraft out of panic or impatience will only take you hundreds of miles further away from where you are supposed to be.

Look around today. Modern society has turned into one massive, overcrowded airport lounge. Everyone is shouting, everyone is outraged, and everyone is broadcasting their dissatisfaction to anyone who will listen. The environment is engineered to keep your attention fragmented, your anger stoked, and your focus scattered.

It is time to stop adding your voice to the confusing signals around you. Cut through the noise.

If you want to move forward—whether in your personal life, your career, your business, or as a citizen committed to building a nation—you must adopt a disciplined, unyielding three-part strategy: Find. Focus. Follow.

First, Find. If there is one thing true opportunities do exceptionally well, it is that they know how to hide in plain sight. Opportunity almost never arrives wrapped in gold foil or accompanied by a grand announcement. It usually shows up disguised as hard work, complex problems, friction, or inconvenient disruption. While the crowd is busy screaming about how terrible things are, the sharp observer is quietly scanning the room to see what needs fixing, what service is missing, and where the current breakdown creates a new demand.

Second, Focus. Finding the opening is only the beginning. Once you spot your flight, you must ruthlessly tune out the surrounding drama. You cannot afford to spend your limited intellectual energy arguing with people who have made a full-time career out of being offended. Lock your attention on the objective. Block out the ambient panic, the media noise, and the easy comfort of passive complaining.

Third, Follow. Vision without execution is nothing more than a hallucination. Once you have identified the opportunity and tuned out the noise, you must follow the course to its logical conclusion. You have to walk to the gate, board the plane, sit down, and stay the course until you land at your destination.

Nations, enterprises, and meaningful lives are never built during periods of frictionless ease; they are forged in the middle of chaos by people who possess the clarity to act. The tragic irony of our time is that millions of people are so thoroughly addicted to complaining about where they currently are that they completely miss the boarding call for where they could go.

Pull back from the daily chatter. Take an honest inventory of your time, your focus, and your conversations over the past few years. Ask yourself one hard-hitting question:

How many life-changing opportunities have I complained away?

Stop grumbling in the waiting lounge while others board the flight to their future. Listen for your flight announcement, gather your strength, step onto the tarmac, and take off.
