King Mswati Summons Zulu King Misuzulu for Reprimand After Public Drunkenness and Gun Videos

King Mswati III has reportedly called his nephew, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, for a royal reprimand after a string of incidents that have played out in public in recent weeks. Sources inside the Zulu Royal Residence at Mashobeni Palace claim the Swazi monarch wants to call Misuzulu to order over behaviour that senior princes say is bringing the Zulu Kingdom into disrepute.

The princes first approached President Cyril Ramaphosa to caution the Zulu king. Ramaphosa then reportedly asked King Mswati to step in. The concerns centre on several events that have circulated widely. King Misuzulu was allegedly seen visibly intoxicated during recent Umhlanga ceremonies at both the Machobeni and Mashobeni royal residences. He was also said to appear in a similar state at the King Shaka Zulu Ilembe commemoration on 24 September 2026.

Videos shared on social media have added to the worry. In one clip from his birthday celebration, the king is alleged to have been playing with a gun in front of a crowd that included children. Another video reportedly shows him playing with a knife. An earlier recording captured him insulting his third wife, Queen Nomzamo Myeni, and Shembe Church leader Mduduzi Shembe, whom he called a silima. In the same clip he allegedly said he secured the Zulu throne through witchcraft.

Sources suggest King Misuzulu’s recent trip to Eswatini may have been linked to these issues. He was seen standing beside King Mswati during the YKK Golden Jubilee celebrations at the Ezulwini Palazzo on 1 September 2026. Separately, tensions inside the Zulu royal house have also drawn attention. On 30 September the king summoned Queen Nomzamo Myeni from her residence in Ingwavuma to Mashobeni. She was accused of leaking royal secrets and of encouraging insults against the king by Thabani Hlatshwayo, known as Putin. Hlatshwayo is said to have launched a sharp verbal attack on both the king and Mduduzi Shembe earlier this week. It is not yet clear whether any action will follow those remarks.

The reports remain based on sources close to the palaces, and neither royal house has issued a public statement confirming the summons. The developments come against a backdrop of ongoing public scrutiny of King Misuzulu’s recent appearances and statements.
