Kalonzo Finally Speaks on Working With Ruto After His Meeting With UDA Official

Kalonzo Reaffirms Opposition Stand After Muthama Meeting Sparks Fresh 2027 Speculation

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has reaffirmed his commitment to the opposition amid renewed speculation over his political plans for the 2027 General Election.

The speculation followed a private meeting between Kalonzo and former United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chairman Johnson Muthama on Thursday evening, October 1. The meeting sparked questions about whether the two politicians were exploring a possible political arrangement involving President William Ruto and his administration.

Muthama, however, later explained that his meeting with Kalonzo was a consultation on national issues affecting Kenyans, without publicly indicating that they had reached any political agreement.

Wiper chairman Jamleck Kamau has also moved to dismiss claims that Kalonzo could support Ruto’s re-election or enter into a government arrangement. Kamau maintained that Wiper remains firmly committed to working with other opposition parties and strengthening cooperation ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.

Kalonzo has also sought to clarify his recent description of President Ruto as his “brother,” which had generated political debate. On September 30, the former Vice President explained that his remarks were rooted in the Christian belief that Kenyans are brothers. He stressed that describing Ruto as a brother should not be interpreted as an endorsement of the President or his administration.

The Wiper leader repeated his opposition message on Saturday during the burial of Mwalimu Jackson Karua, father of former Justice Minister Martha Karua, in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County.

The ceremony brought together several opposition figures, including retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa.

Kalonzo warned opposition leaders against becoming political “moles” for Ruto and urged them to remain united as preparations for the 2027 election intensify.

For now, there is no public indication that his meeting with Muthama resulted in a political agreement with Ruto’s camp. Wiper continues to maintain that it will work within a united opposition framework as the country heads toward the August 2027 elections.
