The First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, Rebecca Kadaga, has hit back at the Katukkiro (Prime Minister) of Busoga Kingdom and executive director of the National Planning Authority (NPA), Dr Joseph Muvawala Nsekere, following his criticism of the ongoing government renovation works at Busoga University in Iganga District.
The public spat highlights growing tensions over the state of the infrastructure at the institution, which was established in 1998 by the Busoga Diocese of the Church of Uganda before its provisional license was revoked by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) in 2017. The government subsequently initiated a takeover process to transition the university into a public institution. Speaking during the Busoga Prayer Week at Rubaga Cathedral, Dr Muvawala stated that the kingdom would not support the official commissioning of the university in its current state. He argued that the structures renovated by government contractors fail to reflect the stature of a public university, comparing them unfavourably to secondary school facilities. “As Busoga Kingdom, we are not going to accept the commissioning of Busoga University because of its visibility. These buildings look like those of a secondary school, yet this is a university,” Dr Muvawala said.
