Just Hours After Unveiling His New Party, Sifuna Pressured to Resign as Nairobi Senator Before 2027

Pressure is mounting on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to resign from his seat and seek a fresh mandate after launching The Equitable Party (TEP).

The call was made on Monday, October 5, by Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, who challenged Sifuna to follow the example set by the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Kaluma argued that Sifuna, having moved away from ODM and taken up a new political vehicle, should vacate his Senate seat and return to voters under the new party. He said this would demonstrate Sifuna’s commitment to constitutionalism and the rule of law.

The remarks come just a day after Sifuna officially unveiled TEP as his new political vehicle ahead of the 2027 General Election.

During the launch in Nairobi, Sifuna spoke strongly about Raila’s political legacy and said the journey associated with the late opposition leader was not yet complete.

Sifuna said he and his allies had tried to convince their former colleagues to change direction but eventually decided to pursue a new path after failing to persuade them.

Kaluma’s challenge has now placed Sifuna in the spotlight, with questions emerging over whether he will remain in the Senate or seek a fresh mandate using his new political vehicle.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei also referred to Raila’s earlier decision to resign from the Lang’ata parliamentary seat after leaving FORD-Kenya. Raila later contested the by-election under the National Development Party and won back the seat.

The issue comes as Sifuna and his allies prepare for a major political battle ahead of the 2027 elections.

TEP has also said it intends to restructure and accommodate Sifuna’s political team, while discussions continue around the wider opposition movement.

For now, attention remains on Sifuna and whether he will respond to the calls for him to give up his Senate seat and seek a fresh mandate under his new political party.
