Julius Malema Shockingly Breaks Silence and Begs Judge for Forgiveness

A disciplinary action that has endured for over five years has been finally resolved when Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema formally apologised to Judge Elias Matojane and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

In reaction to his conduct during interviews with the JSC in 2021, a parliamentary process was begun, and on 30 September 2026, Malema issued the apology in the National Assembly.

In relation to a ruling that ordered the EFF to pay former finance minister Trevor Manuel R500,000 in damages, Malema, who was acting as a commissioner on the JSC, approached Matojane. A debate ensued as a result of this. Matojane was a judge on the Gauteng High Court and a contender for a post on the Supreme Court of Appeal at the time.

It was recommended by the Parliamentary Ethics Committee in November 2021 that Malema apologise to Matojane and the JSC. The National Assembly passed the measure the month after the suggestion was made.

At first, Malema was able to have the apology obligation stayed because he challenged the punishment in the Western Cape High Court. The legislative sentence was upheld, however, in May 2025, when the court rejected his revision request.

After the deadline of February 2026 passed without action, the subject was sent to the Powers and Privileges Committee of Parliament. Afterwards, September 30 was set as the new deadline.

Since Malema apologised in his own tongue, Speaker Thoko Didiza verified that he had fulfilled the legislative requirement.

The apology ends a long-running institutional conflict that started with a controversial interview with the JSC and continued through legal and legislative processes.
