India Targets 10% Share of Global 6G Patents, Aims to Shape International Standards: Jyotiraditya Scindia

India is aiming to emerge as a key force in next-generation telecommunications by contributing 10 per cent of global 6G patents and playing a larger role in shaping international technology standards, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Monday.

Addressing the media and the IFQM Symposium 2026, Scindia said quality, innovation and standardisation would be crucial to India’s ambition of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

The minister said India’s global standing in the coming decades would depend not only on its manufacturing strength but also on the quality, reliability and technological capabilities of products developed in the country.

He said an ecosystem focused on quality standards, innovation and excellence was emerging across industries, institutions and supply chains, which would help strengthen India’s competitiveness in international markets.

Highlighting the country’s changing role in telecommunications, Scindia said India had largely adopted standards developed elsewhere during the 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G eras, rather than playing a significant role in their formulation.

He said the emergence of 6G marked a significant shift in India’s position.

“For the first time in the history of mobile communications, India is not merely following standards established by other countries. India is now becoming an active participant in the global standard-setting process,” Scindia said.

He described the shift as India’s transition from being a “standard taker” to a “standard maker”, as well as a developer of advanced technology platforms.

Scindia said the Bharat 6G Alliance was working to strengthen India’s position in the emerging 6G ecosystem and increase the country’s share of global intellectual property in next-generation telecommunications.

India has already filed several patents related to 6G technologies, he said, adding that the target of securing 10 per cent of global 6G patents formed part of a wider strategy to establish India as a leader in the future digital economy.

The minister said the effort was not limited to technological achievements but was also aimed at increasing India’s influence in global technology governance, innovation and standard-setting.
